In 2018, I delivered a lecture for Deacons in training in the Diocese of Northern Indiana. The topic was the failed reconciliation of the Episcopal Church after the Civil War. Bp. Richard Hooker Wilmer was one of the leaders of the southern “Forget Hell” party that resisted the reunion of the church. A Bishop of the Confederate Episcopal Church, he later pens a sickening reminiscence of a period of American history marked by racism, murder, brutality, and treason. An “unreconstructed'” Confederate, he passes his criminal narrative to his grandsons. A pathetic, and appalling excuse for a memoir. It has recently been reissued and is available on Amazon.com

A contemporaneous biograpy and a selection of writings by Wilmer may be found here
